Augmenting Water at Kurunji Ecosystem for improved wellbeing of Tribals in Kalvarayan & Jawadhu hills- AWAKE project has been initiated in the year of 2021 based on the ground needs of the indigenous communities who are poor and vulnerable living in poorly developed areas. The project has a package of interventions aiming to enable the community for adapting the climate change. The project secures water for drinking, domestic needs, livestock, creates green infra, and promotes alternative energy.

Through this initiative we have renovated 28 community wells, 6 village ponds, constructed 4 Rainwater Harvesting structures, promoted an orchard on 30 acres and we have provided solar lights as an alternative source of energy for 600 Households. This initiative is benefiting 2654 households and 8169 populations 44 villages in Jawadhu and Kalvarayan hills.

Impact

  1. Water will be conserved through the renovation of village ponds. This will contribute to groundwater recharge, access to water for livestock and other wild animals.
  2. Improved groundwater level in the project villages and created access of drinking water facilities.
  3. Harvest of rainwater by establishing appropriate roof-water harvesting structures will drive towards the source-sustainability.
  4. The solar lights will reduce the pressure on fossil fuel and people will access power at cheap prices.
  5. Promotion of green cover on 30 acres of land will result in carbon sequestration  & mitigating the effects of climate change which is a national as well as the global agenda.
  6. Local communities in the project villages will have better knowledge on environmentally friendly water management practices.
